History of Paradise, Kansas

Historic

Water Tower

Photo Credits : Paradise Educated Blog

“The Paradise Water Tower, a WPA project of 1937 was completed in 1938. This piece of art stands 65 feet tall and holds 58,000 gallons of water. It is the only one of it’s kind in Kansas.

In January of 2007, it was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior Nationals Parks Service.”

Kennedy Hotel

“One of the earliest buildings erected in Paradise, Kansas, the Kennedy Hotel (1888, 1936) is significant for its association with the early development of Paradise. The construction of the limestone hotel in 1888 was documented in area newspapers including The Waldo Enterprise and The Russell Record. Catherine Kennedy, who also served as postmaster, opened her hotel in September of 1888.”

View from North East of Town, Early 1900s

Originally the City of Ivamar founded in 1887

“In 1859, a hunting party explored the area, including a small tributary of the Saline River which led them to a site abundant in water, timber, and bison. One of the hunters, James R. Mead, described the site as paradise, and the tributary subsequently became known as Paradise Creek. The first post office in the area opened under the name Paradise in 1875. In 1887, the Union Townsite Company established a town on the north side of the creek northwest of the post office, naming it Ivamar after Iva Marr, the daughter of a local rancher. The Paradise post office relocated to Ivamar the next year, but kept its name.”
